Where are the best places in Jersey to watch and photograph the sunrise and sunset?
Obviously, the west coast is where the best full sunsets can be enjoyed, and the East is where the sun rises, and as Jersey is a small island, it is possible to watch the sunrise and sunset on the same day.
Here are our five favourite places:
CORBIERE
A favourite sunset photography spot for locals and visitors. The sun setting over the horizon with the lighthouse in the near distance makes it easy to get a great shot.
GOREY
On the island’s east coast, the castle and harbour at Gorey provide some spectacular sunrises. Head to the top of the hill behind the Crab Shack to get a magnificent shot of the sun rising above the castle, and at dusk, the lights all along the harbour make a great photo. Head down to the harbour and walk about 50 metres toward the golf course, and you will see some stairs going down to a platform. This a great place to take sunrise photos with the reflections in the water.
ST BRELADE’S BAY
The most popular beach on the island is a great bay for sunset photos. The sun sets over the west end of the bay, so the ‘hump’ that bridges St Brelade’s Bay to adjacent Ouaisne Bay is a good spot for photos.
ST HELIER
The main town in Jersey may not seem an obvious choice, but three great sunset spots are within easy walking distance. Firstly, the marina, with its yachts and motor boats, has great red skies, particularly in Autumn/ Winter. Opposite the very unphotogenic Radisson Blu Hotel is the Freedom Tree, a sculpture marking the 60th anniversary of the Liberation of Jersey. A popular spot for sunset lovers. A short walk along the promenade in either direction will give you a great shot of Elizabeth Castle in the bay.
ST OUEN’S BAY
Stretching along the west coast of Jersey, St Ouen’s Bay is the top choice for sunset lovers on the island. Some of the best sunsets anywhere are here. Good spots are in front of La Rocco Tower and at the bay’s north end at L’Etacq.
OTHER SPOTS
From town heading east Havre des Pas, Green Island, La Rocque, Le Hocq and Grouville Bay are all good sunrise photo opportunities. As any local knows, the best sunrises and sunsets are often in winter!
Happy snapping.
