Well, obviously the west coast is where the best full sunsets can be enjoyed and East is where the sun rises. However, there are other parts of the island at different times of the year where you will see the sun setting and rising and as Jersey is a small island it is possible to watch the sunrise and sunset on the same day.
Here are our 5 favourite places:
A favourite sunset photography spot for locals and visitors. The sun setting over the horizon with the lighthouse in the near distance makes it easy to get a great shot.
On the island’s east coast the castle and harbour at Gorey provide some spectacular sunrises. Head to the top of the hill behind the Crab Shack to get a magnificent shot of the sun rising above the castle and at dusk the lights all along the harbour make a great photo. Head down to the harbour and walk about 50 metres toward the golf course and you will see some stairs going down to a platform. This a great place to take a sunrise photos with the reflections in the water.
The most popular beach on the island is a great bay for sunset photos. The sun sets over the west end of the bay so the ‘hump’ that bridges St Brelade’s Bay to adjacent Ouaisne Bay is a good spot for photos.
The main town on Jersey may not seem an obvious choice but there are 3 great sunset spots within easy walking distance. Firstly, the marina with its yachts and motor boats has some great red skies. Right in front of the- not photogenic Radisson Blu Hotel- is the Freedom Tree, a sculpture marking the 60th anniversary of the Liberation of Jersey. A popular spot for sunset lovers. A short walk along the promenade in either direction will give you a great shot of Elizabeth Castle in the bay.
Stretching along the west coast of Jersey, St Ouen’s Bay is the top choice for sunset lovers on the island. Some of the best sunsets anywhere are here. Good spots are in front of La Rocco Tower and at the north end of the bay at L’Etacq.
From town heading east Havre des Pas, Green Island, La Rocque, Le Hocq and Grouville Bay are all good sunrise photo opportunity. As any local knows the best sunrises and sunsets are often in winter!
